The long wait for two decades has now come to a partial end!!

We are now talking about the inauguration of the third phase of the arm of the Perungalathur flyover towards Chengalpet on Thursday, 1st August 2024. Though the long wait has come to a partial end now, the residents belonging to Kamarajar Nagar would have to walk about 3kms and make a U-turn to go to Tambaram. Point is that these residents would not be able to access the flyover directly.

It must be recalled that the construction of Perungalathur flyover began many years back itself. In 2001, the Highways dept had allotted Rs 86 cr for the flyover here. Now, the estimate stands at Rs 230 crores.

In September 2022, the chief minister of TN Mr. M.K. Stalin inaugurated the first arm of the flyover that connects the national highway between Vandalur-Tambaram. In June 2023, the second phase of this flyover was inaugurated. Yesterday, the third phase of the arm towards Chengalpet was inaugurated by Mr. T.M. Anbarasan, minister for rural industries.

As the flyover is inaugurated now, the traffic congestion between Perungalathur and Chengalpet would be eased. It is known that till now this heavy traffic congestion has been a huge issue here for many commuters.

It was mentioned by a resident from Perungalathur that he would be able to avoid additional 4 kms from now on due to this flyover. He spoke about how he would be able to enter Perungalathur now from the flyover instead of taking a U turn at Vandalur. The Kamarajar Nagar residents are unhappy about the incompleteness of the arm connecting Nedungundram.

According to Mr. S. Nagalingam, secretary of Kamarajar Nagar Welfare Association it was clear that in the emergency situation also the residents were forced to go till Vandalur to reach Tambaram. He concluded that it takes about half an hour to go there from Peerkankaranai.

The residents have now requested the officials to allow them to take a U turn at the Perungalathur junction on Gandhi Road as it would take another 2 years for the completion of Nedungundram arm.
