Good news for the residents belonging to Madhavaram now!!
It is known that a 3.75km double decker metro line is being constructed between Alwartirunagar and Alapakkam at a height of 24m with the help of special girders etc. It is now said that this would help the Madhavaram residents to reach core Chennai places easier.
Information collected is that this double decker( with 4 metro stations) metro line would be an interchange and it would link corridor 4 and corridor 5.
Engineers are using launching girders and feeding gantries that would sit on the top of pillars to install U shaped precast girders. It must be noted that the metro line is being constructed on a narrow road where cranes cannot be used. There is no disturbance to the movement of vehicles below now. Point is that the equipment builds elevated corridors. By the middle of 2026, this double decker metro line (part of Porur to Power House line on corridor 3) would get ready.
It was later explained by Mr. T. Archunan, director of projects, CMRL that launching girder and gantry cost about Rs 15 cr and they were fabricated in China. They could be used to construct elevated metro lines on those roads where cranes could not be used. He threw light on how girders and gantries are being used now on the challenging double decker stretch where both the metro line and stations are being constructed on a single.
It is noteworthy that construction of a double decker metro line is a slow and challenging process. Information gathered is that double deckers would have 4 metro stations present in places like Alawartirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Virugambakkam, Karambakkam and Alapakkam.
It is really superb that once when the metro line opens then the public from Madhavaram and southern Chennai suburbs like Alandur, Madipakkam, Medavakkam etc to shopping hubs in T. Nagar, Marina Beach, IT Corridor in OMR etc by just switching platforms in any of the double decker metro stations.
It was mentioned by a resident from Madhavaram that there were not many MTC buses for going to Chennai. He spoke about how travelling in the cabs or autos etc would be very costly. He concluded that travelling in metro trains would be comfortable, cheap as well as time saving.
