For many years, colleges in Chennai have been producing graduates and post graduates etc and these persons have gone on to achieve greater heights in their professional careers. Now things have changed. Not only imparting education to the students but also developing Greener Chennai is being given importance by the colleges.
Chennai based popular Nandanam Arts College would be taking superb steps towards this Green initiative by planting 300 saplings on its campus in the names of the students. These students would be nurturing the saplings for one year. Information gathered is that those students who maintain the saplings well would be awarded certificates and prizes.
The sensational piece of information is that planting saplings is a part of Pasumai Saidai that has been aimed at creating Green cover in Saidapet. This has been initiated by the TN health minister Mr. M. Subramanian.
The health minister later spoke about how the grills covering the saplings would be given the names of first year students. It is now revealed that out of a total of 300 saplings about 143 saplings would have girl student`s (who have joined first year recently in this college) names.
It must be recalled that Nandanam Arts College established in 1969 has been exclusively for men all these years. Recently, it was converted into a co-educational college and girl students were enrolled in the BA and BSc courses. Point to be noted is that this initiative would create awareness among the students regarding increasing the green cover. Even full grown saplings of 15ft height are being planted now in the college campus. Auditing of trees would be done after a year and students who have maintained the trees well would be given a `Green Protector` certificate.
On 14th August, the students would plant these saplings in the college campus. Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin, minister for youth welfare and sports would launch the initiative. Marks would also be awarded to the students who would be part of this superb initiative. It is now brought out that on the birthdays of the residents of Saidapet, saplings would be planted by the volunteers (of Pasumai Saidi scheme) near their houses.
