On Monday, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) sealed 18 commercial buildings in Kodambakkam and Nungambakkam for operating without mandatory trade licenses. Additionally, three shops selling banned gutkha products were sealed following a police report.
GCC officials stated that the affected shops were given a week to obtain the necessary licenses. They can reopen once they submit the required documentation, including an affidavit and a demand draft for the licensing fee.
The GCC also collected Rs 21.50 lakh in overdue rent from 165 shops previously sealed for non-payment. Following intervention by the local MLA, these shops were allowed to reopen, provided they pay the outstanding rent in two installments.
