The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to construct three new cattle sheds in south Chennai to address the issue of cattle wandering on roads. The total cost for these sheds is estimated at Rs 6 lakh, with the tender to be floated on September 10.
Since July, fines for cattle nuisance have been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, with repeat offenses incurring a Rs 15,000 fine. Persistent offenders will see their cattle impounded in GCC shelters.
The sheds will be located at:
• Venkateswara Nagar Third Street, Adyar, costing Rs 1.91 lakh.
• Veerapandiya Kattabomman Cross Street, Perungudi, costing Rs 2.07 lakh.
• Adjacent to the bio CNG plant near ISKON temple, Sholinganallur, costing Rs 2.02 lakh.
Cattle owners are advised to provide shelters with a minimum space of 36 square feet and a compound wall; otherwise, their shelter licenses will not be issued. Unclaimed cattle will be handed over to NGOs.
