Chennai Airport has begun simultaneous operations on both of its runways, resulting in a 10% increase in flights on the second runway. This change is expected to reduce delays in both departures and arrivals. The main runway, which is 3.66 kilometers long, handles large aircraft, while the 2.89-kilometer second runway is primarily for 76-seater ATRs and private jets.
Recent improvements by the Airports Authority of India, including straightening Taxiway B to enhance movement efficiency, have facilitated this increase. The second runway`s flight operations rose from 615 in April to 952 in June. With these upgrades, the airport`s flight capacity has increased from 30 to over 50 flights per hour.
