Are you a resident belonging to Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Madurai?
Do you find it difficult to come to terms with the heavy noise pollution?
In those cities in TN where the population exceeds more than one million, noise mapping studies would be undertaken by the government. For this, the government would associate with the experts from IIT Madras. In the first step, noise mapping would be carried out in Chennai having more than a million populations.
What is the objective behind the study?
It is learnt that the main objective behind this noise mapping study would be to combat increasing noise pollution due to rapid urbanisation. In the end, a healthier environment would be created. Point to be noted is that the study would be overseen by the TN pollution control board and it would identify noise sources and suggest mitigation measures. Within 3 months, the initial report would come out. In rapidly urbanising cities like Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Madurai, the TN state pollution control board has stressed the immediate need to regulate noise pollution.
Various factors that have contributed to increased noise pollution in these above said 4 cities in TN are increased migration of people, spike in the vehicle traffic, industrial activities, constructions & developments in infrastructure etc. The heavy noise pollution would be harmful to the health and for the psychological wellbeing. The TN pollution control board stresses the importance of ambient air quality standards associated with noise.
It was later brought out by Mr. Siva Meyyanathan, environment minister that noise pollution must be controlled. He spoke about how the permissible noise levels in the residential places was 55 decibels during day and 45 decibels during night. Truth is that sometimes the noise levels become high due to traffic or other reasons. He concluded that not just the sources of noise pollution would be identified but the ways to prevent it. The noise pollution would create an impact on our nervous system and hence there is a huge need to control the noise pollution just similar to water and air pollution control measures.
Information gathered is that as per the noise pollution rules 2000 areas have been categorised as industrial, commercial, residential and silent zones. The permissible noise level in the industrial areas during the day is 75 decibel and during night is 70 decibel. The noise mapping study would be done by TNPCB with the help of sensors at selected locations
