The State Environment and Climate Change Department has allocated Rs 5.20 crore to expand the Green School Programme to 26 government schools. According to a government order issued by department secretary P. Senthikumar, each school will receive Rs 20 lakh to implement eco-friendly measures. This funding will be provided by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).
This new allocation builds on a 2022 directive that allocated Rs 5 crore for the initial phase of the project, which covered 25 schools. In the 2023-24 budget, Department Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan announced plans to extend the programme to 100 schools with a total investment of Rs 10 crore. Additionally, Rs 9.20 crore was approved in March for 46 schools.
The programme includes initiatives such as installing solar-powered pumps, implementing rainwater harvesting, growing vegetables and fruits, and recycling sewage water.
