The Madras Race Club in Guindy has been sealed by revenue officials, led by the District Collector, due to non-payment of taxes. This action follows a court order regarding arrears totaling ₹780 crore.
The 160 acres of land leased to the Madras Race Club in 1945 is set to be returned to the Tamil Nadu government in March 2044, after a 99-year lease. Reports indicate that the arrears due from 1970 to 2004 amount to ₹730.87 crore.
Established in 1777, the Guindy Race Course is the oldest horse racing course in India.
