The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled plans to construct four new ponds at the Madras Race Club, significantly enhancing the area’s water storage capacity. These ponds, once completed, will collectively hold nearly 100 million liters of rainwater, a critical increase from the existing capacity of 30 million liters provided by the three earlier ponds.
Due to rapid urban growth and the increasing demand for water conservation, the previous capacity has proven insufficient. This new initiative by the GCC aims to address the shortfall and ensure better rainwater harvesting in the area, contributing to water security for Chennai.
In a recent update on their official X handle, GCC reported that the construction work is progressing smoothly, with teams working around the clock to complete the project. The initiative is part of the city`s broader efforts to improve infrastructure and prepare for future water needs, especially during the monsoon season.
This move reflects the GCC`s commitment to long-term water management solutions and sustainable urban development.
