In a significant development for motorists, the state highways department is set to widen the left-hand side (LHS) of the Pallavaram Grade Separator from one lane to three lanes. The decision follows persistent traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours, despite the separator being opened for two-way traffic in January.
Initially constructed to facilitate straight traffic from Tambaram to Guindy, the grade separator, which spans 1.5 km, faced challenges due to narrow roads on the LHS. The highway department has now acquired necessary defence land after an MoU was executed to recreate infrastructure on the defence site.
With the completion of related works on May 31, 2024, tenders have been issued to proceed with the road widening, which will enhance traffic flow along GST Road. The widening project will vary in width from 2.85 to 6.20 metres over a distance of 460 metres, addressing the longstanding traffic issues in the area.
