Chennai Corporation Collects 213.61 Metric Tonnes of Cracker Waste After Deepavali

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has successfully collected a total of 213.61 metric tonnes of cracker waste across its 15 zones during the Deepavali festivities. The collected hazardous waste has been transferred to the processing plant at Gummidipoondi for safe disposal.

Zone-Wise Breakdown of Cracker Waste Collection

- Valasaravakkam (Zone 11) led the tally, generating the highest cracker waste of 21.69 metric tonnes over the festival period.
- Teynampet (Zone 9) followed closely, contributing 20 metric tonnes, while Anna Nagar (Zone 8) reported 19 metric tonnes.

On Deepavali Day, 53.86 metric tonnes of cracker waste were collected city-wide:
- Perungudi (Zone 14) generated the most, with 6.04 metric tonnes.
- Valasaravakkam (Zone 11) came next with 5.57 metric tonnes.

By Friday, up to 4 pm, GCC collected an additional 159.75 metric tonnes:
- Anna Nagar (Zone 8) contributed the highest volume on this day with 15.48 metric tonnes.
- Ambattur (Zone 7) came in second, generating 14.78 metric tonnes.

 Lowest Collection Zones
Among all zones, Sholinganallur (Zone 15) had the least cracker waste collected, totaling 3.73 metric tonnes over the past two days.

 Enhanced Cleanup Efforts
To expedite post-festival cleanup, GCC intensified garbage clearing operations on October 31 and November 1, with conservancy workers tirelessly clearing the waste from dawn till dusk to restore the city’s cleanliness.

A senior GCC official commended the conservancy staff, noting their dedication in quickly reviving the city’s streets.
