The long-awaited MRTS train service between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount is expected to commence operations by May this year. The extension project, initiated in 2008 to connect Chennai Beach to Velachery via St. Thomas Mount, faced multiple delays due to land acquisition disputes and legal challenges.
The project, which was initially estimated at ₹495 crore, has seen its cost rise to ₹730 crore over the years. Out of the 5 km stretch, only 500 meters of construction remains unfinished. After nearly 15 years of delays, the work is now progressing at full speed.
This MRTS train extension is set to bring significant benefits to residents in and around Velachery and St. Thomas Mount. It is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and provide a reliable mode of transportation for commuters. Residents have expressed their excitement and optimism about the completion of this long-pending project, which has the potential to transform their daily travel.
Initially planned for completion in 2010, the project has been plagued by setbacks. However, officials are confident that the MRTS train service will be operational by May. The official launch date will be announced after the remaining work is completed and the Railway Safety Authority grants its approval.
The completion of this project is seen as a key milestone for Chennai`s urban transit system, providing faster and more efficient connectivity for the city`s residents.
