In 15 zones belonging to the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation, a survey regarding homeless persons has been conducted since 25th of January is known. According to the survey over 60% of the homeless persons in Chennai belong to the vulnerable group of women, mentally ill persons, elderly and children. The able bodied men formed 39.46% of the homeless in the city. It must be noted that most of these men were unemployed.
Recently, a 31 yr old person who got a job as store keeper at a restaurant for a monthly salary of Rs 16000 was asked to leave the job after 7 days. He is now homeless and wants a home to live in. In the same way, there are many in Chennai who are homeless and they have asked for a home from the TN govt.
As per an official belonging to GCC it was very clear that housing has been the major need for the families living in the city for more than two generations. The need is more especially in the Royapuram zone in north Chennai having George Town.
Important piece of information is that as on 14th of February as many as 9623 persons have been homeless in the streets in Chennai.
For the survey, the civic body has roped in NULM staff from 200 GCC divisions. Point to be noted is that the volunteers included 75 students from Madras School of Social Work, Ambedkar College, Hindustan Arts and Science College and 200 NULM staff supported by GCC sanitary inspectors and officers etc.
In Chennai, the largest number of homeless persons is present in the Tiruvottiyur zone, Royapuram zone, Teynampet zone and Kodambakkam zone. It was later confirmed by an official that the northern region covering George Town, Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram and Royapuram have individuals who are homeless.
In southern Chennai, new hot spots have been identified with as many as 539 homeless persons in Valasaravakkam, 417 in Alandur, 482 in Adyar, 413 in Perungudi and 177 in Sholinganallur.
Information is that the largest number of mentally ill persons was present in the Teynampet zone and the highest number of homeless women was present in the Royapuram zone.
