Superb news regarding constructing & renovation of over 1000 toilets in Chennai!!

In the future, don`t be surprised if you come across renovated toilets in various zones across Chennai!!

On Thursday, 27th February 2025, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation adopted a resolution to privatise over 1000 public toilets in 13 zones. It is said that the renovation work would be carried out in 4 packages. For the works, an amount of Rs 1234.84 cr has been allotted. By this, the residents belonging to Chennai would be benefited.

A concessionaire would be chosen by the GCC through an open bidding process who would design, build, finance, operate and transfer or DBFOT toilets in the 13 zones for a period of 9 years. Point is that one year would be for design, build and transfer and the remaining 8 years for operations and maintenance.

For the purpose of review and approval, a detailed feasibility report or DFR has been submitted to TNIDB or Tamil Nadu infrastructure Development Board. Point to be noted is that based on the DFR comments from TNIDB an inventory assessment as-is study was taken up. Information is that the project structure was revised to a Hybrid Annuity Model.

In the Royapuram zone or zone 5, Thiru VI Ka Nagar zone or zone6 and Marina under package 1, 3270 toilet seats are being renovated and public toilets are being built in 372 places. After conducting a survey regarding the toilets condition in Chennai, the GCC has classified these toilets into 3 categories. The work has been given priority (in package 1) based on the classification.

In Thiruvottiyur zone or zone1, Manali zone or zone2, Madhavaram zone or zone 3 and Tondiarpet zone or zone 4, public toilets would be renovated and maintained by the private contractors for 9 years under package 2. For this project, an amount of Rs 380.50 cr has been allotted.

At an estimated cost of Rs 467.99 cr, 395 toilets present in 4 zones namely Ambattur zone or zone 7, Anna Nagar zone or zone8, Teynampet zone except Marina and Kodambakkam zone or zone 10 would be handed over to the contractors.

The private contractors would construct and maintain 322 toilets in 5 zones from Valasaravakkam zone or zone 11 to Sholinganallur zone or zone 15. An amount of Rs 295.35 cr has been allotted by the civic body.
