Tamizh Puthaandu or Tamil New Year falls on 14th of April 2025.  In the normal scenario, the sales of fruits and flowers at the Koyambedu market complex in Chennai before Chithirai Tamil NY would be good but this time around it is opposite.

According to some Koyambedu wholesale traders, no huge sales of flowers and fruits have been recorded now compared to 2024. The prices remain almost the same. It must be taken into account that normally there would be brisk sales of fruits and flowers a couple of days before Chithirai and Vishu and these are very important festivals of Tamilians and Malayalees.

It was later brought out by a few wholesale fruit sellers and flower vendors at Koyambedu market that sales have been low this year when compared to last year. There was even a dip in the sales inspite of the fact that the Tamil Puthaandu was close to Sunday. They concluded that the sales might pick up on the festival day that is Monday.

In the wholesale market, the flower prices were hovering around from Rs 100 to Rs 600 per kg and were low during the weekend. On Sunday, the price of Kanakambaram flower was highest at Rs 500 to Rs 600 per kg.

Point is that Marigold or sammandhi poo was sold for Rs 160 to Rs 180 per kg. Malligai poo or jasmine was sold for Rs 300 per kg in the evening. Information is that chocolate rose was sold at Rs 140 per kg, paneer rose at Rs 100 per kg.
