Plantain trees from Andhra, Karnataka, Tuticorin and Cuddalore flooded the Koyambedu market. Every year these plantain tress uses to be brought in 40 lorries but this year is has been increased to 80 lorries. Last year a plantain tree was sold for Rs 7. This year it has been increased to Rs 400.

The reason for this is that lots of plantain trees were destroyed due to heavy rains. Because of this hike, people and small retailers are scared to buy these trees. Aval, Pori`, and Pottu Kadalai have also arrived in bulk quantities from various part of Tamil Nadu. The prices of these products have also gone up very high putting people in lurch.
