The sudden price hike of cement as resulted in builders putting a hold on construction. Cement prices which were rolling around Rs 310 for a 50 kg bag last August have now shot up to Rs 370 per 50-kg bag. Builders report that their cost outgo per sq ft has gone up by around 20-30 per cent. A rise of Rs 50 per 50-kg cement bag leads to an increase in construction costs by approximately Rs 20-25 per sq ft.
Total cement demand in Tamil Nadu is pegged to be around 500 crore tonne per year of which about 4.8 crore tonne is produced by the government and private producers in the state.
