The Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, yesterday flagged of city’s first 50 mini buses.
The small buses, with a seating capacity of 27, will operate as feeder services in suburban areas as an alternative to autos and share autos. Pallavaram, Chromepet, Perungalathur and Velachery in the south, and Moolakadadi, Madhavaram, Ambattur and Porur in the north-western regions of the city will get the bulk of the services.
The 50 buses will cover 20 routes, and the minimum fare is 5. The idea is to connect railway stations and bus terminals with important junctions and residential areas. The small buses will be parked in the same depots as regular buses. The idea behind small buses is to provide services for interior areas that regular buses do not reach, and reduce people’s dependence on private transport.
