15 compaction meters has been acquired by Chennai Corporation to to check the strength and quality of a newly laid road surfaces. The machines have been distributed to the 15 zones of the city corporation.
The machine, resembling a lawn mover in appearance, would check if the road mix is dense and strong enough to last at least for a year. The machine, when placed on the road, will send electromagnetic waves that would penetrate the road surface and travel 40 mm deep and bounce back.
A reading of the reflected waves would help find empty spaces between the tar and gravel. The lesser the empty space, the stronger and denser the road.
