39km stretch between Thandalam and Arukilpadi on a state highway will be widened to facilitate movement of trucks from Rajiv Gandhi Dry Port (still under development) to National Highway-4, connecting Chennai to Bangalore and Mumbai. This was announced by Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

This stretch, which is on the outskirts of Chennai, will pass through Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Vellore districts. A high number of industries are located in the area. The highways department has split the works into two phases to finish it faster. The first phase will cover a forest area and so it does not require land acquisition.

Separate work orders will be given for the second phase which will require land acquisition. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 81.18 crore.
