Thevar Jayanthi - Chennaites frustrated because of traffic congestion

Nandanam is supposed to be the key signal junction in Chennai. If there is any disturbance here, there would be impact  in traffic for 5 kms. Today morning, vehicular traffic in several parts of the city, including T Nagar, Guindy, Teynampet and Saidapet, was thrown out of gear on Wednesday as thousands of people from Chennai and neighbouring districts flocked to the Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar statue at Nandanam to observe the late leader`s 106th birth anniversary.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa garlanded Thevar`s statue at 10.30am.Loud music, dance and crackers at the junction infuriated commuters who were trying to cross the junction. Police sources said at least 2,500 people were on the spot at any given time. Several Chennaites took to the social media to express their frustration. Others pointed out that even ambulances were stuck in the traffic. The law and order wing of the Chennai city police has deployed 700 personnel to control the crowd that seemed to grow bigger with every passing minute.The Chennai traffic police have deployed more than 500 men, or 15% of their strength, to regulate traffic.
