For city residents leaving for either school or office, city corporation’s garbage collection lorries are becoming a great menace. The compactor lorries, which collect garbage from the bins and compress them, often engage in the peak hours of the morning. As the lorries frequently halt on roadsides and take up much of the road space, traffic gets choked on arterial stretches.
The city Corporation’s official timing for collection of garbage using the compactor lorries is from 6.30 am to 10.30 am and from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. While the Corporation claims that collection of garbage from arterial and other major roads are done only at night to avoid traffic jams, residents say this is often violated. However, even a traffic bottleneck created in a branching road could end up in a ripple effect causing traffic snarls on arterial roads.
The Corporation lorries have also gained much averse public sentiment as they are getting involved in road accidents claiming lives of school and office-goers, of late.
Last Wednesday, Tirupathi Rao, a CLRI staff member, taking his two children to school was hit by a garbage collection lorry killing him and his daughter Neerajana (12). His son Teja Rao, (10) is battling for life at a private hospital. Similarly, on July 25, Vishali (19) riding pillion on a motorcycle on Bricklin Road was hit by a garbage collection lorry and she came under its wheels.
Chennai Mayor S Duraisamy agrees on the existence of the problem and promises to sort it out soon.Duraisamy says a new committee has been constituted to examine the issue and recommend how the garbage collection can be completed during the night time itself. “The committee will come up with its recommendations within 15 days on this issue. We look forward to implementing the recommendations and bringing an end to this problem immediately,” he said.
