Chennai Corporation is devising a plan to remove all the filth and waste carried by the rivers. The rivers in Chennai are much slower as compared to rivers in other places.

Chennai’s Cooum River, Buckingham Canal and Adyar waterways are heavily polluted.

The garbage thrown in these waterways and the sand block the stream. The slow stem flow and the heavy pollution cause multiplicity of mosquitoes in these places leading to several diseases. Chennai Corporation is carrying out several steps to counter this.

Filters will be installed to block the mixing of garbage and sand in these waterways.

Corporation officials informed:

Large quantities of waste materials, garbage and the sand from rainwater drainage systems are dumped in the river causing high breeding of mosquitoes leading to diseases. As a part of the activities to prevent this, filtering arrangements will be installed in a spaced arrangement in these waterways. This will help increase the stream of the waterways.

The garbage collected in the filters will be removed periodically. The filters are also proposed to be installed in the river confluence areas and rainwater drainage systems. This will prevent sand entering the waterways.

The plan is in the initial stage. The shape of the filters and the location are yet to be decided. An early decision will be taken on this.
