The
law emphasizing all the government buses, private buses, and the commercial
vehicles to fit speed limiters is coming to act from the 1st of
April, 2014.
The
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways laid down this order in the month of
December 2012. The State Transport and Highways department has initiated the
work towards executing the order. This order was laid in order to reduce the
number of accidents that occurs because of high-speed buses and load vehicles.
As
per the act, from April 1st of 2014, all the new and old vehicles
will be fit with electronic speed limiters that restrict the vehicles to a
maximum speed of 80 KMPH. The vehicles exempted from this act include two
wheelers, three wheelers, and the vehicles that weigh less than 3,500 kg like
Police Jeeps, Ambulance, Fire Engines, and commercial vehicles with state and
national permits. As per this act, the vehicle manufacturers need to fit the
speed limiters even before the vehicles come on the road. The Speed Limiters will
be stamped by the State Transport Commission or the District Transport Offices
so that it cannot be replaced or removed from the vehicles. The same will be
inspected when the vehicles approach to get the certifications. The Omni buses
that exist under the contract vehicle divisions are exempted from this rule and
will be inspected under regular Transport rules. In addition, state-level teams
have been organized to execute and inspect the implementation of speed
limiters.
