A school for Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) has been launched by The Institute of Road Transport, a State-run organization for research and training in the area of public transport in its campus in Taramani The school for the general public aims to reduce road accidents and foster lane discipline among motorists. Around six lakh cars ply on city roads.
The month-long course is conducted on both a daily basis and on weekends alone in the six-acre driving range inside the campus. Since its inception over a month ago, a total of 135 persons have obtained their driving licences. The cost for the daily course is Rs. 3,660 and the weekend course costs Rs. 4,000.
The fee is much lesser than that of private driving schools and a government certificate is also provided to the students. People from all walks of life approach for the course. Over 50 per cent are IT professionals and top executives of companies. An official said that the IRT evaluates the performance of the student and also helps in getting the driving license.
The basic training for beginners includes traffic signal familiarization, practice in skill driving, various exercises such as starting and stopping the engine, familiarization and how to start and stop on a slope.
