Om Prakash Chaube, Chief Mechanical Engineer, South Eastern Railway (Mechanical) while speaking at a seminar on ‘High Speed Rail Travel’ said, “Trials are being conducted to operate express trains above 160 kmph which would usher in a new era of high-speed travel in India.” The main objective of the seminar is to exchange ideas and latest technical developments on high-speed rail travel to ensure more efficient and better services to users.
A presentation was made on high-speed trains of different countries. It may be mentioned here that last month, Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge launched a new body — the High Speed Railway Corporation — to conduct studies in this regard. The Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd., is currently engaged in feasibility studies of two projects — the Delhi-Chandigarh- Amritsar high-speed corridor and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor. Currently the fastest passenger trains in India run at sub-100 kmph.
