The Tamil Nadu Barbers` Association have hiked rates for haircut and shave.
The cost of a haircut, as approved by the association, has gone up to Rs 100 while a shave now costs Rs 50,. About 10,000 saloons in Chennai have hiked the charges citing increases in prices of cosmetics and other essentials with effect from 1st January.
However, barbers in villages and small towns are not happy, as many of them are not paid in cash and only given food. Barbers, along with dhobis and potters, have demanded 5% reservation for their children in education and employment.
There are 15 lakh barbers
in Tamil Nadu and 25,000 of them are in Chennai.
