The Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. V. S. Sampath has told hat the dates for the parliamentary election will be announced shortly.
He conducted a meeting with Mr. Praveen Kumar, Tamil Nadu State Election officer, and the Chennai Corporation collector, Mr. Vikram Kapoor on Sunday, 9th February. He informed:
Meetings have been held all over the country in several states. A meeting is scheduled on 10th February at New Delhi to be participated by all state election officials. Another meeting for The Chief Secretaries and Police DGPs is scheduled on 20th February.
The agenda for these meetings include conducting the election, facilities at the polling booths, Police Security, etc. The transportation of the votes and the election-related communication aspect will be discussed with the Railway & BSNL authorities.
Single Day Election in Tamil Nadu: The political parties from Tamil Nadu have recommended that the election should be conducted in a single day. This is being examined.
21 lakhs new voters: Tamil Nadu voters’ list was released on 10th January. 21 Lakhs new voters have been added. 10 lakhs have been deleted. Voters who shifted theirresidences will have to register with evidence to restore the names in the list.
With the voters’ identity cards having been issued for the majority, it is likely to be used as the single identity source.
