1,063 interior roads in the city have been identified by Chennai Corporation to to relay with concrete at a cost of 172 crore. The city will have 170km of highly durable white-top roads by March.
The corporation has already got the project going in various neighborhoods and hopes that once the roads are relaid, they will last at least three decades without major damage.
The officials said they identified roads worst affected by rain and had to be repeatedly relaid. Even Monday’s brief showers battered many roads in the city, residents said.
Normal life came to a standstill and routines were thrown out of gear in several localities due to the rainfall leaving roads damaged. In other places, like Thirunagar in Villivakkam, the roads were waterlogged for hours. But Thirunagar is likely to get a cement road soon.
Corporation officials say laying roads with concrete is much more expensive than laying them with the traditional bitumen-tar mix, but they hope it will pay off in the long run with much less having to be spent on maintenance. He said the civic body had so far relaid 260 roads with concrete and given others the base concrete layer required before they receive a concrete top.
Officials said the corporation relaid 69 interior roads in localities like Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Adyar.
