TANGEDCO has commenced activities to reduce transmission losses in Chennai and 87 other cities.

The transmission loss is estimated to be more than 15% in the distribution of power. Project for reducing this loss is undertaken by RAPDRP at the cost of Rs. 3,000 Crores.

The transmission loss will be brought down fewer than 15% in the next 5 years. 112 cities have been selected based on the Census 2001. It was founf that transmission loss is less than 15% in 10 cities. Hence, the project will be implemented in 94 cities.

EB officials informed the project is implemented in 87 cities including Chennai.

Transmission losses are low in high voltage systems. So, all low voltage transmission lines are being converted to high voltage systems.

Systems of 11kV, 33 kV, and 100 kV will be provided for establishments including factories.

For residential areas, systems of lower voltage levels will be used. The voltage system will be at a higher level until close to the residential areas. 33kV substations are being commissioned. Bigger cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, & Tuticorin and smaller cities like Kovilpatti, Tiruvarur, Aranthangi, and Thuraiyur are brought under this project.
