The Chennai Corporation’s annual budget this year will include expenses on plans to create more parking spaces in the city. Targeting to end parking along road sides and free the traffic, the Chennai Corporation is devising plans to create new parking slots at vacant lands across wards. For many years now, it has been a convention to park bikes on road sides. This contributes to the major reason for the city’s traffic and inconvenience to pedestrians.
Speaking to a corporation official, we’d like to utilize the vacant lands and frame a new traffic management system, throwing away all the traffic troubles. For this, field surveys are being done at various places in order to identify the unused lands. “We will not make use of open space reservation (OSR), parks or playgrounds. Only the empty areas will be made use of,” he pointed.
In addition, the officials also made an announcement regarding the construction of two level mechanical parking system in about 40,000 sq. ft. at corporation health centre, Sivagnanam street in Kodambakkam.
