Gas Dealers on strike from tomorrow (25th February) throughout Tamil Nadu

900 gas dealers throughout Tamil Nadu will strike work from tomorrow.

This will greatly affect the families with only one cylinder.

Mr. P. Rajendra, President, Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry, All-India Gas Distributors’ Union, informed:

13,700 gas distributors supply cylinders to 13Crores customers with 10 Crores cylinders.

In Tamil Nadu, 900 distributors supply 1 Crore gas cylinders for 1.3 Crore families.

The dealers are facing several challenges. Non-uniformity in prices for different category leads to maloperations. With the improper shape of the cooking gas cylinders, anti-soicial elements transfer the gas to other cylinders and sell them in black market.

The dealers’ union has demanded that safely sealed cylinders should be deployed. Excess penalties are also being charged under different pretexts. So far, there has been no solution to these demands. The Union, with 900 dealers in Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry,  plans to go on strike from tomorrow (25th February). However, supply of cylinders to hotels, Hospitlas, and other commercial establishments will not be stopped.

As 70% of the families have 2 cylinders, the strike may not affect the consumers by a large margin. The families with one cylinder will be affected. The union requests that this inconvenience should be borne by the public. The registration for new cylinders will continue.

The ministry of petroleum and the companies should help resolve this issue.
