Fund for Seawater Desalination Process– Central Government Inference

The water desalination plant at Nemmeli, Chennai, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal has been inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalitha on 22 February 2013.

In a couple of days, nearly 15 lakh people of southern Chennai and the expanded areas, especially Velachery, Thiruvanmayur, Pallipattu and areas adjoining the IT Corridor such as Karapakkam will be supplied desalinated water from the plant that has a capacity to treat 100 million litres of sea water per day (mld).

With the project estimated to cost Rs. 908 Crore, a grant of nearly Rs.871.24 Crore was sought from the Central government.

During the cabinet meet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, many highlighting decisions have been taken place including:
  • Decision has been taken for the initiation of around 54 new Kendriya Vidyalaya Schools, from which nearly 17 states, 53 districts and 54 thousands students will be getting benefited.
  • Rs.3, 500 Crore fund for serving cell phones and laptops for disabled children.
  • Cabinet agreed for the fund of Rs. 2962.78 Crores for casing the G.S.L.V.  M.K.-3 rocket and its related plans.
  • Rs.550 Crore fund for safeguarding the environment of the 12 states surrounding the Himalayan mountain region.
