Unaccounted money to the tune of Rs.83,000 was seized from a motorcycle rider on Saturday midnight by a flying squad (election).

According to police, the squad led by Assistant Block Development Officer of Kurunthencode who conducted a vehicle check at Puthalam under Kanyakumari Assembly segment stopped the motorcycle rider carrying the cash.

As he could not answer the officials’ questions, they seized the money and asked him to take it back after submitting documents.

This is the first time that the flying squad seized the amount after the announcement of the election date.

The district administration formed 18 election flying squads, three each in Kanyakumari, Colachel, Padmanabhapuram, Vilavancode, Nagercoil and Killyur Assembly segments.

Each squad consisted of six persons led by one revenue official in the rank of Deputy Tahsildar, four police personnel and a videographer.

They had already started vehicle checks throughout the district and warned that any unaccounted money or freebies to lure voters would be seized, according to collectorate sources.
