No more family courts on Sundays

Family courts will have a break of Sundays. The concept of seven working days had been facing flak from advocates and court staff since it was introduced in July, 2010, when weekend sittings were introduced to benefit working couples who had to attend hearings in matrimonial cases. But the schedule soon took its toll and there were protests from bar associations stating the functioning of holiday family courts was against the law
.
In November 2013, advocate Sudha Ramalingam filed a PIL stating the Madras high court had not framed statutory rules for constituting holiday family courts. In response, the registrar general said these courts had been constituted in the larger interest of litigant public.

On Wednesday, the registrar issued a notice saying, “The high court in partial modification of the holidays sitting of the family courts, directed that the weekend holiday sitting are restricted to Saturdays alone.”
