Coping up with stress at work place

Posted on: 14/Mar/2014 4:24:52 PM

Gone are those days when men, women and children had the realms of joyful restrains into their homes. But today, the homes-sweet homes are turning out to be just a house of bricks and sand. Yes, the spirit of joy goes missing and there is no laughter and merry things happening around. Incisively, the emergence of IT based jobs, online markets and more easy routes to fill your pockets with pennies has become the order of the day. But what many have failed to realise is that the big money, big luxury and big fame comes in a package of loss of mental peace and physical health. The diseases that our previous generations would acquire during their late 50s have now jumped into the league of 20s. Diabetics, blood pressure, thyroid and to a shocking extent, even the dangerous cancer that used to be a rare disease has become an intriguing part of ending up the lives of human.

What’s the reason behind all these physical and mental upheavals?

Its stress, the killer agent that is haunting at least 8 out of 10 persons to a greater magnitude.

Before few months, there was a story published in a leading newspaper. A IT professional with a great job and big money was found dead hanging at his residence in Perambur (Chennai). The reason might sound so silly for many of us. It’s not a stereotypical reason that usually reads – financial crisis, personal issues or professional pressures. He committed suicide because he went unbearable to severe stomachache.

1. Plan from your home:

Never say – I`ll come late to office and leave at late hours of night. Remember this first!!! ‘Body’ and ‘Mind’ are the greatest assets you can never earn after it is lost. So keep your mind fresh. So start preparing your time schedule from the time you wake up. Start early from office so that you can go slowly and it doesn`t matter even if it takes one hour of slow ride.  Always keep ‘Home’ in your mind. It is the only place where you can find solace and refreshment, however might be the situation.

2. The miraculous 60 minutes:

Make this your ritual practice at workplace. Whatever may happen – power cut, internet problems, system error, etc.., Don`t ever-never get affected by these hurdles. Leave all these things behind and don`t waste the first 60 minutes of your office time chatting, cracking jokes and gossiping. If you don’t have anything in hand, just pick a piece of paper and pen to plan something and get some creativity stuffs to carry forward the next hours of your day effectively.

3. Know your ‘Active’ and ‘Inactive’ periods:

None of us are Superheroes. You don`t get unceasing energy from Thor’s Hammer or Harry’s magical wand. If your work time is about 8 hours, mark my words – you can be active only for 3-4 hours (24O/480 minutes). This duration may vary from one person to the other. So analyse and mark down your ‘Active Period’ and this can have a big effect on your work.

4. Don’t gossip:

This is a communicable disease that pre-exists over ages. If you are not interested, you are pulled into the loop, which becomes a major spoiler. Discussing politics isn`t going to give a positive result in your work. What if Sachin Tendulkar retires or not? What if some Khan is romantically linked with south actress? This is completely an idle gesture. Yes, it might help kill your time, but definitely doesn`t help you.

5. Avoid envy:

Make sure about one thing. Every day has its significance. Even the most commonly known ‘Sunday’ i isn’t declared as a holiday in Arab countries and ‘13’ is an unlucky number in USA. So, everything is unique and so are you. If a colleague in your workplace is acclaimed for his/her achievement in success graph, there is no need to get envy. Just realise your goal and stride on it. If AR Rahman felt jealous about MS Viswanathan or Ilayaraja, he would have remained the same, where he was before 25 years. But he analysed and self-studied his potentials, worked on its best and finally has a street in Canada named after him. The world needs you and your talent. So keep running on your grids and don`t keep looking up for other contestants of the game.

6. Ban the ‘personal’ issues:

This is an ‘Indian version’ of Satan that will ruin your entire ambience. ‘Vibration’ is something that can create a magic anywhere you are, especially in your workplace. When you walk into the office space, make sure you forget your personal issues and never show the effect of your household spouse clashes and other issues with your colleagues. In reality, forgetting the home worries and clashes and focusing on work can bring a peace of mind and things can turn to be better when you return back home.

7. Bring the musical tranquility on your desk:

The Bamboo flutes, chimes, ocean sounds and chirping birds. What else do you need than this to rejuvenate your minds? Listen to some meditation music and if possible ask your management team to set up a surround system in your workplace to experience the soothing serenity in your minds that will enable peace at work.

8. Deep breath: We all run behind many medications and meditations to set our minds straight and focused and beat our stress. But the best method is a deep breath that can work wonders. A deep breath of inhale and exhale can clear your mind and help committing yourself at the fullest of job.

9. Become nature’s friend:

This is nothing to do with more money. A very little can do it indeed. A compact waterfalls set up, a small aquarium, a bamboo shoot on your work table. These elements will result in a best change. If you are not able to afford these assets, just take a walk and look at the green trees or else try to focus on a fresh flower placing it on a vase beside you. It’s fragrance and beauty is your best friend.

10. Avoid junk and smoke:

It happens at times. Maybe in India, its guys who move out often burn the ‘cancer sticks’. Smoking is just a temporary solution to burn out your stress, but cannot help you anywhere to progress in your work. In contrast, it will severely affect your health causing burning sensation to your throats and nose. When you sit before a monitor, the heat is tremendously generated and this put together can ruin your health. In all likelihood, the junk foods can be a health havoc and make you put on more weight.

These are just 10 things that are basic elements to follow, but there is something you will have to follow close to your heart. "Performing a task with heart and soul is meditation". As you perform your activities based on this formulae, everything can turn perfect for you at work place.
