The Madras Literary Society Library located at Nungambakkam is one of a kind having over 83000 books. It was established in the year 1812 as the Asiatic society of Madras. Considering the entire southern region, this is the oldest library among all. Once you enter the place, you will find yourself isolated from the heavy traffic and noisy outdoor happenings, and get deep into the silent, peaceful and soothing atmosphere of the library. It has a sheer design and unique from other structures.
Until 1905, this library was housed within Connemara library and later on it was shifted to the current building located inside the department of public instruction. The library has a collection of precious and very rare books. Oldest among the collection is Aristotle’s Opera Omnia in Greek and Latin which was published in the year 1619. Besides having the very first edition of various books, the library also contains the original documents and other survey materials of Ganges Canal plain (1854) and the Buckingham Canal project (1898).
