India gets its very first revolutionary waterless toilet powered by the solar energy. Over 2.5 billion people will be benefitted out of this new project. This is designed with the aim of providing an eco-friendly solution to the people by making use of human waste. In addition, they also want the waste materials to get used in a productive way.
The design is done by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at a cost of over $7,77,000. This is a part of Gates Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge. Dozens of faculty members, professionals and students are working on the project.
How does it function?
The waste materials will get converted into biochar which is a highly porous charcoal. The toilet heats up the human waste to a specific temperature and the materials get sterilized that in turn results in formation of biochar.
The system will be kept for display for the scientists, engineers and dignitaries on 20th, 21st and 22nd March.
