CHENNAI: Book lovers in the city are in
for a treat. The annual Chennai book fair organised by the Booksellers and
Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI) would feature over one crore
books on a variety of subjects and languages, including Tamil and English.
The 33rd edition of the 12-day book fair,
which opens on December 30 here at the St George’s School
grounds on Poonamallee High Road,
will be inaugurated by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. He will distribute the
Kalaignar Porkili awards instituted by him through a corpus fund of Rs 1 crore
and will give away cash prizes worth Rs 1 lakh to each awardee.
While speaking to reporters here on
Saturday, Sethu Chockalingam, president, BAPASI, said 360 publishers will
participate in the fair and 606 stalls will be set up. The association expects
around seven to 10 lakh people to attend the fair.
Oratorical contests have been organised
for school and college students and five lakh free passes have been distributed
to schools in Chennai to encourage better student participation.
“Over 400 new titles, including those
focusing on children, self development, time management, besides literary books
and works translated from other Indian languages to Tamil, will be on offer at
the fair,” he said.
Each entry ticket (Rs 5) is eligible to
win a prize in the form of books everyday. A sprawling parking lot, toilets,
supply of drinking water, and a restaurant has been made available to cater to
the needs of visitors.
Literary discourses, seminars and patti
mandrams are scheduled to be held everyday in which celebrities such as actor
Kamal Haasan, spiritual orator Suki Sivam, literary speakers Prof Gnanasambandan,
Solomon Pappaiah and Tamil litterateur Tamizharuvi Manian will participate.
