The Government Railway Police (GRP) have decided to intensify security on suburban and long-distance trains after the murder of a 52-year-old man by a transgender in the Minjur railway station.

Six teams, each comprising a Sub-Inspector of Police and two constables, would be on escort duty between Egmore and St. Thomas Mount. From Mount to Perungalathur, another team would take over. Similar teams had been formed to cover the Chennai Central and Avadi as well as Chennai-Gummidipoondi sections. Six teams had also been deployed for the MRTS section between Chennai Beach and Velacherry.

If travelers faced any problem from transgenders, they could register a complaint with the GRP or pass on the information to the railway police helpline: 99625-00500.

The GRP could book cases under the IPC Section 384, which awards three years imprisonment. Many an occasion the passengers gave money to transgenders when the latter demanded. Only if they informed the GRP about the harassment, could action be taken.
