It is a great relief to Chennaites who were worried about the water as the summer is peaking. Now the city can heave a sigh of relief with the Krishna water gurgling into Poondi by Sunday night.
Although the city has nearly 4 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water to quench the thirst of residents, official sources feel the inflow of water has arrived at the right time.
Sources said that about 1,200 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water from Krishna was discharged from the Kandaleru reservoir on March 26 after the supply was stopped on March 10. The water reached Zero Point on Sunday morning. By tonight it will reach Poondi reservoir.
The Poondi reservoir is nearly dry and has only 104 million cubic feet of water against the full capacity of 3,231 million cubic feet.
This is in the wake of Chennai Metro Water coming out with a contingency plan to ensure the city’s thirst is quenched during the summer. The focus is on tapping groundwater resources by drilling additional borewells and hiring agricultural wells. Veeranam lake may have a significant quantity of water but Metro Water is not taking chances.
