After study of environmental impact, National
Highway Authority of India [NHAI] has decided to scale down the planned
Elevated Expressway from Chennai
Port to Maduravayil to it
a ‘linked Road’. Originally the project was planned at a cost of Rs 1665 Crores.
This decision is in reaction to apprehension raised by K P
Subramanian, Former professor of Urban Engineering, Anna University,
who claimed that Mandatory Impact Assessment is Mandatory for the Elevated
Expressway project. This Elevated Expressway project was twice turned down by
the Union Ministry of Environmental and Forests. The Ministry had suggested
public hearing before the conduct of the project as per EIA notification, 2006
and that the project should address the environmental and other issued raised
by the public
