Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar has mentioned that the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system, wherein a voter will be able to see a printout of the symbol of the candidate to whom he has voted, will be introduced in the Central Chennai parliamentary constituency in the State. As per the electoral roll published in January, the strength of electors of Central Chennai, which comprises the Assembly segments of Villivakkam, Egmore, Harbour, Chepauk-Triplicane, Thousand Lights and Anna Nagar, is 12,80,251. The facility of VVPAT will be made available in all 1,153 polling stations of the constituency.
The printout of the image, which could be viewed through a glass window, would be retained in the VVPAT unit.
If there is any discrepancy in the display on the VVPAT machine and the choice made by the voter, he can complain to the presiding officer at the polling station, who will look into the veracity of the complaint. A test vote can be made to check the machine, which will not be counted. He added that during counting of votes, if an agent or a candidate has a complaint, he can give it in writing to the Returning Officer (RO) who will look into the request and verify the votes polled, along with the printed slips.
