Skymet, a private meteorological agency issued details about its forecast of this year’s southwest monsoon. It has a distressing report that there is a warning of Pacific Ocean. It is given the name El Niño and it is said to pull down the southwest monsoon in 2014. According to sources of India meteorological department (IMD), the monsoon is due April 25.

In general, a monsoon rain of 96 to 100 per cent is considered normal. But, this year, only 94 per cent is expected by the initial days of June. Chance of having a normal monsoon is 34 percent and about chance to have below normal rain levels, it is 40 per cent. And shockingly, there is a 25 per cent chance to have drought condition this year. Receiving rain above normal level is above 1 per cent.

This being the case of monsoon this year, farm outputs are left without knowing how the crop production would be. If things go the negative way, it is obvious for the grains, pulses and vegetable prices to reach exorbitant levels. Enquiring about this to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology’s former director, D.R.Sikka, he said excessive moisture will have bad impact on the crops and that nevertheless below normal rainfall, crops may still have good growth if the rain distribution is good.
