On the first day of the two-day Edu Fair 2014 that began on Saturday at the Chennai Trade Centre the unanimous opinion expressed by educationalists and researchers was that Government must do more to encourage research.

The event organised by The New Indian Express and the VIT University has over 40 universities and colleges wooing students with courses in engineering, medicine, architecture, arts and science, design, short-term soft-skill training and so on. But the highlight of the event, which was inaugurated on Saturday, was the ‘Innovation Zone’ where students from schools and colleges displayed their solutions on a range of areas.

G Viswanathan, founder and chancellor of VIT University, said, “It is heartening to see that students have taken so much interest in taking up projects even with the limited resources that are available to them. The government and industry must reach out to higher education institutes and ask them to come up with solutions through research projects. At the moment, this kind of collaboration is limited to a few institutions. It needs to expand to all institutions. Apart from the Central government, the State governments too needs to step in to provide support to students with good research projects"

He further added pointing out that projects must also be given exposure though fairs and expansion of the technology business incubators.
