Chennai to be a city of LEDs

Chennai Corporation has commenced installing LED street lights on important roads. The  Chennai Corporation’s scheme to install over 1,10,000 LED street lights across the city has gained pace, as the newly-opened flyover in Mint became the first flyover in the city to have LED streetlights.
 
While the Corporation has taken the plan forward in the city’s suburbs with 12,000 LEDs already installed, the Mint Flyover, along with a few other places, is the first to sport 150 Watt LEDs, while the ones in the suburbs are only low intensity 40 Watt LEDs. According to the Corporation, the flyover will serve as a testing ground for LED streetlights on flyovers, as the Corporation has revealed plans to install LED streetlights in all upcoming flyovers.
 
A total of 155 LED streetlights that now adorn the flyover and its service lane have come at about twice the cost of regular streetlight fixture.
 
Apart from the flyovers, the Corporation has already started installing LED streetlights along several roads that needed streetlight replacement like Conran Smith Road, Ethiraj Salai and Bharathidasan Road. According to the Corporation officials, several other roads will get the LED upgrade.    
 
Apart from this, in its budget, the Corporation has also announced that the LED lights will be installed in the city’s subways.ut twice the cost of regular streetlight fixtures
