Light House closed due to security reasons

The Light House in Marina was opened to the public some five months back. Now the lighthouse went out of bounds for people following the twin bomb blasts at Chennai Central. While a notice put up at the entrance cited lift failure, regional director of lighthouses T Ramadoss said the department did not want to take risks at this juncture. The entire police machinery is focusing on Chennai Central now and we cannot take chances by opening this structure, he said. It remains unclear if the facility will be opened any time soon.
The department had shut down the facility due to security concerns after the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. The nine-floor lighthouse has had two lakh visitors, including 49,000 children, since it was reopened by Union shipping minister G K Vasan in November.
