Election results to be delayed on counting day

Election Commission has planned to give copies of the results after every round of counting to agents/candidates and because of this the announcement of results of the general elections is likely to be delayed on May 16.This would cause a delay of about 15 minutes after every round. The first round of results will be officially declared at 10am, sources said.

Chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar said the EC had directed him to give a photostat copy of the results of every round to the agents allotted to each table. “This is to avoid confusion at a later stage,” he said. The counting will begin with postal ballots at 8am, and electronic voting machines will be taken up subsequently at 8.30am.

Sources said the presence of a large number of candidates in the fray, along with manual procedures such as display of the ballot unit to the polling agent and random checking of two machines by observers would cause further delay.

Meanwhile, the bomb blasts on board a train at Chennai Central on Thursday has spurred the EC to strengthen security arrangements for counting of votes on May 16.
