Tamil Nadu government has started with the necessary steps to set up mono rail in Coimbatore. Earlier, between 2001 and 2006, the AIADMK party set up plans to establish mono rail services in Chennai. This however got delayed because of a case filed against the introduction. Amidst this, there were changes in ruling political parties and in a course of time, the metro rail came into the picture replacing mono rail.
When AIADMK took position in the state again in 2011, announcements were made to introduce a 300 km long metro rail services in order to reduce the heavy traffic across the city. They also added that mono rail scheme will be introduced in Coimbatore, Madhurai and Tiruchi to reduce traffic there too. The governor stated that compared to metro rail, mono rail is cheaper and consumes lesser construction time.
Now, the state government has come up with necessary steps to introduce mono rail in Coimbatore. Speaking to one of the senior officials of Tamil Nadu government, he said Tiruchi, Madhurai and Coimbatore will soon get mono rail services and the works are ongoing.
